The Carolina Panthers have signed third-round draft choice (67th overall) Charles Godfrey from Iowa and seventh-round draft choice Geoff Schwartz (241st overall) from Oregon, the team announced Monday.
A 5-foot-11 and 205-pound safety, Godfrey played in 47 games with 28 starts and recorded 193 tackles, two forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, seven interceptions and 14 passes defensed for the Hawkeyes. As a senior in 2007, he was a second-team All-Big Ten Conference selection after producing 65 tackles and a team-leading five interceptions, the most by an Iowa player since 2003.
Schwartz, 6-foot-6 and 331 pounds, started 36-of-41 games at tackle for the Ducks. He made 13 starts as a senior in 2007 and earned second-team All-Pac 10 Conference honors while contributing to an offensive line that helped Oregon lead the conference in rushing with an average of 251.7 yards per game. Schwartz also opened holes for running back Jonathan Stewart, Carolina's 2008 first-round draft selection, who set a school single-season record with 1,722 rushing yards.
Also, the Panthers have waived tight end Chad Upshaw. He had been claimed off waivers from Denver on April 16.
Carolina has now signed seven of its nine draft choices. Still unsigned are Stewart and first-round pick Jeff Otah. The Panthers begin training camp on July 25 at Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C. and have their first practice a day later.
